Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim experiences the strain during their 3-1 loss at Brentford
Man Utd head coach Ruben Amorim acknowledges he is unable to hide from his poor performance and says it is normal that club icons are criticizing him.
Earlier this week, United's all-time goalscorer Wayne Rooney told his show that "the soul has gone" from his former team.
Amorim has achieved just 18 victories from his 49 matches in charge, featuring nine out of 33 in the English top flight, where he has still to secure back-to-back consecutive wins.
While high-level club sources are certain that the club owner remains backing the manager, failure to beat recently promoted Sunderland on the weekend will ignite renewed discussion about his role heading into another fortnight pause in domestic football.
"This is expected," commented the Portuguese manager, when asked about the former striker's remarks. "One cannot hide from the performance."
"Additionally you have the history from last season, [although] last season for me doesn't matter."
United's followers stayed behind their manager following last season's dismal showing, when they ended up 15th in the table - their worst showing since the 1973/74 relegation season - and were defeated in the European showpiece, in the expectation that this season would be considerably improved.
The manager assured supporters the position would get better because he had additional time to work with his team without the weekly commitment of European football.
That is not how the opening six games have materialised as United have endured three losses so far and find themselves 14th in the table.
When questioned what promises he could provide followers that the position will change, Amorim stated: "It's not the time to talk, it is the time to demonstrate."
"Personally look at the games this season and, for me, they are completely different, but I have nothing to add at the current time."
