Equatorial Guinea Duo Handed Four-Match Ban for Referee Verbal Assault at Afcon.

Player serving a suspension

Carlos Akapo will miss his nation's final group game at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Equatorial Guinea skipper Carlos Akapo and fellow squad member Josete Miranda have both been suspended for four matches for verbally attacking the referee after their 1-0 defeat by their opponents at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The ruling was made by a governing body committee after it examined the referee's report from the Group E clash on the weekend, a loss that sealed the team's exit from the tournament.

The official stated that the two players "repeatedly directed insulting and obscene comments" towards him and his linesmen after the final whistle.

"Such comments were delivered in a atmosphere of intense anger related to the defeat, but nonetheless constitute a serious breach of the principles of sportsmanship and fair play as well as the disciplinary regulations," added the referee.

Two matches of the respective suspensions for the two players have been suspended for a term of one calendar year.

Immediate Consequences

The duo will now miss their nation's last tournament fixture against their next opponents on midweek.

In a related development, the country's governing body has been fined a sum of ten thousand dollars after its coaching team and players engaged in "persistent and abusive complaints" against decisions by the refereeing team.

The official documentation indicated there was "a progressive decline in behaviour on the sidelines" after an own goal by defender Saul Coco in the 74th minute.

Additional Governing Body Measures

In another incident, the tournament organizers have also fined Burkina Faso captain Bertrand Traore the sum of ten thousand dollars for "inflammatory comments" made in a post-match interview after his side's 1-0 loss to Angola.
