British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of approach shafts leading to the depot... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their valour," Healey said. "They were part of a great many UK service members on duty over the holidays. This action, to eliminate militants who threaten our security, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
