At Least 6 Lose Their Lives in Stampede at Ghanaian Military Recruitment Event
No fewer than 6 individuals have lost their lives during a crowd crush at a armed forces enlistment gathering held in a sports arena in the West African nation.
The Wednesday's "tragic" event seems to have been caused by "a sudden rush of candidates who breached security protocols and rushed into the gates," announced a release from the nation's military.
Twenty-two others were hurt, among them 5 who remain in critical condition.
A large crowd had gathered at the El-Wak sports venue, in the main city, Accra, with the hope of joining the armed forces.
The country has a rate of joblessness among young people of approximately thirty-two percent, the latest official data show, and such recruitment events typically attract large crowds and frequently result in disorderly situations.
The deadline to submit applications for this recruitment was prolonged for a seven days to accommodate additional candidates, as some had faced difficulties in the process.
Army spokesperson Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin said the crush took place ahead of the event's scheduled start of 06:20 GMT.
Ghana's President John Mahama has gone to see the injured in medical care.
Calm has been restored, and the recruitment exercise has since started.
